HTML5 VS Flash - Will HTML5 Take the Place

It’s been five year since the announcement of HTML5 and yet the HTML5 vs. Flash debate continues to rage on among developers. HTML5 is overwhelming and it has been widely used by notable web browsers (IE 9+, Opera 10.60+, Firefox 4+, Google Chrome 6+, Apple Safari 4+, etc) and some leading web companies (Apple, Google, Microsoft, Emaze, etc). However, does it mean HTML5 will take the place of Flash? I don’t think so. At least, not yet.

Flash is definitely powerful. Currently, 85% of the most-visited websites use Flash in one form or other, and 75% of web videos are viewed using Flash. That means, currently, the overwhelming majority websites prefer Flash. HTML5 still has some way to go to catch up with Flash’s capabilities, for example, when animating vector graphics using JavaScript and a HTML5 tag, you’ll get some visual degradation and also have to write a lot of code. It takes a lot of JavaScript to do the same thing as that of Flash.

But we have to admin one thing that, to view Flash contents needs Flash plugin, which Mac and most mobile devices don’t support. Considering user experience, Flash is not performing like the best of the best. Chances are that, your site is aiming at Mac users or mobile devices users, and you embed a Flash SWF video to the webpage, but your target users can’t even see it. Terrible, isn’t it? In that case, you have no choice but to use an SWF to HTML5 Video Converter for Mac to convert the .swf file into HTML5 formats.

Today, over 75% of developers are already using HTML5, and 74% of the browser market now supports HTML5 video. It is open source, and everyone can easily embed videos to an HTML5 webpage by using HTML5 tags — no extra plugin is needed! As HTML5 continues to gain ground in overall browsers support, the cat fight between the meteoric HTML5 and Adobe Flash is getting fiercer and fiercer. Since both of them have got advantages and disadvantages, why can’t them just get along well with?
