Three Types of Produce You Should Never Put in The Fridge EVER!

While preservation is a perfectly natural response of any living being out there, there are times wherein we think we preserve but we actually do more bad than good.

An example of such a case is when people put certain types of produce in the fridge to keep them from turning bad. True, the motive is good and no one wants to use a bad potato, onion, etc, fact is, doing so does more harm than good. Then again, not all produce suffer from being refrigerated.

The problem now, however, is to know which types of produce to refrigerate and which ones to not and while the list below contains only three, it is a start.

Potatoes

The one produce that you never would want to put into a refrigerator would be a potato, not unless you want it’s starch to turn into sugar. Wait, starch is sugar, right? Technically, yes. However, the extra sugar does not do good for potatoes when you cook them, as they taste “sweeter” in a bad way. Not only that, refrigerating potatoes also make them more likely to darken prematurely, making them look less appetizing.

If you want potatoes to stay fresh for as long as possible, you may want to store them exclusively in a cool, dark and dry place, something that a refrigerator never is.

Tomatoes

Ever wondered why most produce that turn bad when refrigerated always end with an o? I do too, but this is not exactly a time for conspiracy theories.

Kidding aside, tomatoes suffer much from being refrigerated, in which they turn soft and mushy. This result to a huge blow in terms of taste, but also in terms of nutrition given when prepared. If you want your tomatoes to last long, make sure that you store them in room temperature.

Onions

Plenty of people often think that onions do not suffer from being refrigerated. What these people do not realize is that there is a reason why onions do not grow in the cold. If left in the refrigerator, onions lose their crispiness, their aroma and most important of all, their scent, which makes them useless as a spice.

As said above, these are only three types of produce that you must never put in the fridge. However, these three are some of the most important types of produce known to man, and that most, if not, all people use these types of produce everyday when they cook.

As a rule of the thumb, however, vegetables or fruit or any type of produce for that matter, do not usually belong in the fridge. It dries them out. It takes their taste away from them. It makes them less of the produce that they were supposed to be.
